WEST LAVINGTON MANOR OPEN GARDEN DAY
A FUN DAY OUT FOR ALL THE FAMILY
SUPPORTING CHARITY
Saturday 13th June 11am to 6pm
Step into 500 years of history at West Lavington Manor garden open day. Home in the 1600s, to John Danvers – the politician, garden designer and key signatory to the death warrant of Charles 1, Danvers married Elizabeth Dauntsey from the Lavingtons. He was reknown for his European travels and bringing the Italianate garden to his home in Chelsea and West Lavington.
The Manor’s main palladium style gates, the Dauntsey / Danvers marriage crest and a few parts of the house are remnants of Danvers time at West Lavington.
Significant enhancements over the last 50 years include the channelling out of the stream to create a lake with duck house, fabulous topiary formations and cloud pruning, a spectacular arboretum, laburnum walk lined with alliums, coloured gardens, a chess garden and over 25 different species of apples, plums and pears. Visitors are most surprised with the authentic Japanese garden, built by the current Australian owners, the Domans.
Monty Don, was impressed that two Australians had embarked on such a garden transformation in the heart of Wiltshire and featured West Lavington Manor in his British Gardens BBC TV series and book.
This year, the garden open day, will have a new sculpture - “The Blue Head” by Paul Vanstone. Made from Bolivian Marble, sourced near Le Paz, the lapis lazuli, is a striking new addition along the Herbaceous Border amongst the blue and purple spring blooms.
THIS YEAR’S ACTIVITIES ARE A STEP UP
West Lavington Manor’s garden open day is Saturday 13 June. From 11am – 6pm, there will be live entertainment, refreshments and activities for all ages.
